Tooth Colored Fillings for Cavities

At Winning Smiles, we choose to use mercury-free tooth colored fillings, made of a composite of resin. While silver colored amalgam fillings can be highly visible, the resin composite can be matched exactly to the natural shade of the teeth, to blend in seamlessly for a more aesthetically pleasing smile. In addition, the process involved with placing the composite leaves more of the original tooth structure intact and can increase the structural integrity of the tooth. Patients with composite fillings, as opposed to amalgam fillings, often experience less sensitivity at the site of restoration.

How do fillings work?

First, consider how a cavity works.

Cavities are caused by bacteria in plaque, which coats our teeth. That bacteria feeds on carbohydrates from the food we eat and produces acid, which eats away at our teeth. These cavities get worse over time, eating away at the enamel first and then more sensitive areas of the teeth underneath.

Despite popular opinion, you might not even know if you have a cavity - most are totally painless. But if your dentist finds a cavity, he or she will likely recommend a filling.

Fillings have two parts: the dentist remove the part of the tooth that has already decayed and replace it with a filling. Fillings can be made from all sorts of different materials, but usually they're a silver amalgam, a white resin or porcelain. Gold fillings are also relatively common.
